เป็นคำแสดงตำแหน่งที่ใช้เรียกตัวเอกอัครราชทูต ทั้งโดยวาจาและโดยลายลักษณ์อักษร เป็นคำที่เริ่มใช้กันตั้งแต่สมัยทำสนธิสัญญาเวสต์ฟาเลีย (Treaty of Westphalia) เมื่อ ค.ศ. 1648 และได้นำมาใช้ทั่วทวีปยุโรปหลังจากการประชุมคองเกรสแห่งเวียนนา (ค.ศ. 1815) แต่ถ้าบังเอิญเอกอัครราชทูตของประเทศหนึ่งใดเป็นบุคคลเชื้อพระวงศ์ แทนที่จะเรียกเอกอัครราชทูตผู้นั้นด้วยคำว่า Excellency ก็ให้เรียกด้วยคำว่า ?Royal Highness? แทนแต่เดิมคำ ?Excellency? ซึ่งเป็นคำเติมหน้าชื่อแสดงตำแหน่งนี้ใช้เรียกเฉพาะตัวเอกอัครราชทูตเท่า นั้น แต่ในทางปฏิบัติ ทุกวันนี้ได้นิยมใช้เรียกตัวอัครราชทูต (Ministers) เช่นกัน ส่วนภริยาของเอกอัครราชทูตนั้นก็ได้รับการยกย่องโดยใช้คำ Excellency ด้วย แต่สำหรับเอกอัครราชทูตที่เป็นสตรี สามีของเธอจะไม่ได้รับเรียกเช่นนั้น นอกจากนั้น คำแสดงตำแหน่งนี้ยังใช้กับรัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงการต่างประเทศ และมีหลายประเทศได้นำไปใช้เรียกประมุขของรัฐบาลหรือรัฐมนตรีด้วย แต่การปฏิบัติดังนี้ย่อมแตกต่างกันในแต่ละประเทศ ส่วนเลขาธิการสหประชาชาตินั้น ใช้เรียกกันเป็นทางการว่า Excellency และสำหรับกรณีที่ไม่เป็นทางการก็เรียกว่า Mr. Secretary-General[การทูต]
