จดหมายเหตุ, สถาบันจดหมายเหตุ, หอจดหมายเหตุ, Example:Archives มีความหมาย 3 ประการ ดังนี้ 1. เอกสารที่ส่วนราชการ รัฐวิสาหกิจ หรือเอกชนผลิตขึ้นเพื่อใช้ในการบริหารหรือการปฏิบัติงาน ซึ่งแสดงถึงประวัติและพัฒนาการของหน่วยงานนั้น ๆ เอกสารเหล่านี้ได้รับการสงวนรักษาไว้อย่างถาวรในหอจดหมายเหตุเพื่อเป็นหลักฐานสำคัญในการศึกษาค้นคว้าอ้างอิง การวิจัยเชิงประวัติศาสตร์ และการตัดสินทางกฎหมาย จึงเป็นมรดกทางวัฒนธรรมที่สำคัญยิ่งของชาติ จำเป็นต้องได้รับการจัดเก็บรักษาไว้อย่างเป็นระบบ และถูกต้องตามหลักวิชาการจดหมายเหตุ เอกสารสำคัญนี้ เรียกว่า จดหมายเหตุ หรือ เอกสารจดหมายเหตุ (Archival materials) 2. สถาบันหรือหน่วยงานที่รับผิดชอบในการดำเนินงาน การจัดหาหรือรับมอบ การจัดเก็บดูแลรักษา และการถ่ายทอดสาระของเอกสารไปสู่ผู้ใช้ตามหลักวิชาการ ความหมายนี้ เรียกว่า สถาบันจดหมายเหตุ หรือ หน่วยงานจดหมายเหตุ (Archival Agency) สำหรับหน่วยงานราชการที่รับผิดชอบในการบริหารงานจดหมายเหตุระดับชาติของไทยในปัจจุบัน คือ สำนักหอจดหมายเหตุแห่งชาติ กรมศิลปากร 3. ตัวอาคารหรือส่วนของอาคารที่เป็นที่จัดตั้งหรือที่ทำการของสถาบันจดหมายเหตุหรือหน่วยงานจดหมายเหตุ ความหมายนี้ เรียกว่า หอจดหมายเหตุ (Archival Repository) [บรรณารักษ์และสารสนเทศศาสตร์]

Open Archives Initiative

โครงการริเริ่มคลังสาระถาวรด้วยเทคโนโลยีแบบเปิด, Example:Open Archives Initiative (OAI) เป็นองค์กรที่จัดตั้งและได้การสนับสนุนจาก Andrew W.
