ย่อจากคำเต็มว่า Microsoft Windows เป็นชื่อของโปรแกรมระบบวินโดว์สของบริษัทไมโครซอฟต์ ซึ่งทำงานภายใต้ระบบไมโครซอฟต์ดอส (Microsoft DOS) ที่เขียนโดยบริษัทเดียวกัน ถือว่าเป็นโปรแกรมระบบที่ได้รับความนิยมสูงสุดในปัจจุบัน ไมโครคอมพิวเตอร์ที่ใช้ชิป 80286 ขึ้นไป สามารถใช้ระบบวินโดว์สได้ ระบบวินโดว์ได้พัฒนาตลอดมา ปัจจุบัน กำลังอยู่ระหว่างหัวเลี้ยวหัวต่อที่จะเปลี่ยนจากวินโดว์ส 3.1 เป็นวินโดว์ส 95 วินโดว์ส 97 และวินโดว์ส 2000 ต่อไป ระบบวินโดว์นี้จะรวมเอาโปรแกรมอรรถประโยชน์ (utility program) ต่าง ๆ ไว้ให้อย่างพร้อมมูล นอกจากนั้น หลายบริษัทยังสร้างโปรแกรมสำเร็จต่าง ๆ ให้ทำงานบนระบบวินโดว์สนี้ เช่น Aldus PageMaker, Freelance ทุกโปรแกรมจะมีวิธีการใช้พื้นฐานคล้ายคลึงกัน ทำให้ง่ายในการเรียนรู้ เพราะเรียนรู้โปรแกรมหนึ่ง ก็ทำให้มีแนวที่จะเรียนโปรแกรมอื่นง่ายขึ้น ระบบวินโดว์สนี้ จะเน้นในเรื่องการใช้ภาพเป็นสื่อ มีการใช้เมาส์ ใช้เมนู มีรายการเลือกต่าง ๆ ทำให้ผู้ใช้รู้สึกสะดวกขึ้นมาก[hope]
